Help Monkey World Make The UK A Better Place For Captive Primates

Not a sporting subject but this is a cause close to my heart.

Calling all sports fans to aid Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, a primate rescue and rehabilitation centre who do some outstanding work saving primates, from being mis-treated and traded from around the world.

I am not asking you to donate money to the cause, only that if you agree, help us by spending a couple of minutes adding your signature to a petition.

A while back I raised concern with Monkey World after seeing a couple of primates being sold in a classified ad in the UK.The pictures showed two primates in what looked like a bird aviary in a back garden and let me tell you, they did not look in perfect health and were getting on in life.

I can understand Monkey World do not have the resources to fight an outright ban on primate trade in the UK, although I am definitely sure that if they did they would try make it happen.

So with that said Monkey World are trying to petition the Government to ensure that any captive monkeys receive a standard of care that meets their behavioural and physical needs regardless of whether they are kept in private homes or pet shops.

They are asking the British Government to issue guidance to local authorities, responsible for granting licences for these exotic pets, to use the same standard of duty of care as they would for primates kept in zoo's or wildlife parks (the Zoo Licensing Act 1981).

If a monkey is deserving of a certain standard of care in a zoo or wildlife park, by definition it is deserving of the same standard of care in a private home or pet shop. Monkey World would like their concerns addressed by the Government and Select Committee immediately.

All we're asking for you to do is sign the petition and confirm your email address to validate your signature.
